A Roth IRA custodian is the brokerage that holds your account — the tax rules are federal and identical everywhere, but what the custodian lets you do is not. This page compares 20 US custodians across 15 capabilities — matches, rollovers, options tiers, crypto access, custodial accounts, exit fees, and whether the awkward admin can happen online — with every cell sourced to the custodian’s own documents and re-verified on 2026-07-16.
What the 300 cells say
- check_circleThe account is free everywhere; the exit isn’t. Transfer-out costs run from $0 (Fidelity, IBKR) to $200 all-in (M1) — and Acorns only lets you leave by liquidating, at $35 per ETF.
- warningEvery IRA match has strings. Seven custodians pay one; most demand a paid subscription, a five-year hold, or both — the match table below does the net math.
- check_circleOnly Fidelity offers spot crypto inside the Roth itself. Nearly everyone else’s “crypto” means ETFs.
- warningThe fully-digital pitch breaks on admin. Fixing an excess contribution — a 6%-per-year problem — is true online self-service only at Fidelity and M1; at 7 of 20 it’s phone-or-paper, and 3 publish no process at all.
- check_circleNo custodial Roth at any fintech app. A minor’s Roth IRA means Fidelity, Vanguard or E*TRADE online — or paper/phone at Schwab, Merrill, Firstrade and T. Rowe.
How to read this page
Custodian comparisons usually rank — “the 7 best Roth IRA providers” — with affiliate links deciding the order. This page doesn’t rank, because the right custodian depends on which single capability you can’t live without. Use the filter to apply your dealbreaker, or read the four tables straight through. Custodian names link to a detail card with the fine print. And if you want to audit us: download the workbook — a color-coded matrix, the full sourced dataset, the match math (it recalculates), and charts; every cell ships with the source URL and the verbatim quote it rests on.
Filter by your dealbreaker
Most people don’t need fifteen columns — they need the one that disqualifies. Pick it; the tables below shrink to the custodians that pass.
What does it cost to hold — and to leave?
Every custodian here opens a Roth IRA for $0 commission on stocks and ETFs. The differences hide in the second column: what it costs to move out ranges from $0 to a $200 stack of exit fees, and three platforms charge a monthly subscription just to have the account.

How easily can money get in?
Three ways money arrives: new contributions (sometimes matched), 401(k) rollovers (sometimes concierge-assisted, sometimes a mailed check), and Roth conversions (a tax event you may want to execute without a phone queue in late December).

What can you invest in — and how hands-off can it be?

Will it handle the awkward stuff online?
The capabilities nobody checks until they need them: opening a Roth for your kid, un-doing an excess contribution before the 6% excise tax compounds, or claiming an inherited IRA without a fax machine. This is where custodians differ most.

The match offers, after the strings
An IRA match sounds like a 401(k) match, but it’s a marketing budget with conditions. Here is every live offer on a maxed 2026 contribution ($7,500 under 50) after subtracting the subscription each one requires — plus the string most likely to bite.
| Custodian | Headline match | Gross on $7,500 | Required subscription | First-year net | The strings |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Webull | 3.5% (Premium) / 1% without | $262.50 | Premium, $40/yr | ≈$222 | Keep Premium 1 year and the matched money in the account 5 years, or the match is clawed back. Terms can change at Webull’s discretion. |
| Ally Invest | 3.5% promo | $262.50 | None | $262.50 | New-IRA promo: open by 7/31/2026, fund by 12/31/2026; existing Ally customers’ first Invest IRA only; cash contributions only (rollovers, transfers and conversions earn nothing); 24-month hold; robo IRAs ineligible. |
| Robinhood | 3% (Gold) / 1% free | $225 | Gold, $5/mo ($60/yr) | ≈$165 | Self-directed IRAs only — the managed (Strategies) IRA gets no contribution match. 5-year hold or an Early IRA Match Removal fee applies; keep Gold 1 year from the first Gold match. |
| Stash | 3%, capped at $225/yr | $225 | $12/mo plan (required for the IRA anyway) | ≈$81–$117 | Match applies to net monthly contributions — withdrawals in the same month reduce it. The subscription buys the whole platform, but it’s still $108–$144/yr out the door. |
| Acorns | 1% (Silver) / 3% (Gold) | up to $225 | $6–$12/mo (required anyway) | varies | First subscription year only — the match ends after year one. New contributions only; rollovers and transfers excluded. |
| SoFi | 1%, evergreen | $75 | None | $75 | The quiet one: no subscription, no promo window, and it also pays 1% on 401(k) rollovers. No published clawback beyond standard terms. |
| Public | 1% contributions | $75 | None | $75 | 5-year hold (early removal forfeits the match). The 1% transfer/rollover match ended 5/31/2026 — public.com’s IRA page still displayed the old bonus copy when we verified; the terms document controls. |
| The other 13 | No match | — | — | — | Schwab’s referral bonus (up to $1,000) is a deposit bonus, not a contribution match — and Fidelity, Vanguard and the rest pay nothing. A match is a fintech customer-acquisition cost, not an industry standard. |
Arithmetic, not advice: figures use each program’s published terms as of 2026-07-16; subscriptions priced at annual billing where offered. A match is paid into the IRA and does not count against your contribution limit. Programs can change or end at the custodian’s discretion — and one already has this year. The workbook version recalculates if you change the contribution amount.
What the marketing pages don’t lead with
Everything below comes from the custodians’ own documents — terms PDFs, fee schedules, help-center articles — surfaced during verification. This section is why the page exists.
- priority_highPublic still advertises a match that ended. Public’s 1% transfer/rollover match expired May 31, 2026 per its own Match Program terms — but the IRA landing page still carried “bonus” copy when we verified in July. If you transfer expecting a match, the terms document wins.
- priority_highMatch money has a five-year leash. Robinhood, Webull and Public all claw back or fee-away the match if the matched dollars leave within five years. A “3% match” is really a 3% loyalty contract.
- priority_hightastytrade pays nothing on idle cash — and charges $135 to leave. Its own support pages state IRAs earn no interest on uninvested cash, and a full exit stacks the $60 IRA closing fee on the $75 ACAT fee. TradeStation is similar: no sweep, $175 all-in exit.
- priority_highSoFi’s “no fees” has two asterisks. A $25 fee applies per 6 months of login inactivity, plus a $100 IRA closing fee — both in the official fee schedule, neither on the marketing page. The robo version also carries a 0.25% annual advisory fee.
- priority_highAcorns has no exit door, only a shredder. Acorns Later IRAs can’t transfer out in-kind: leaving means liquidating every position ($35 per ETF) and moving cash. In a Roth that’s tax-free, but you’re out of the market during the move and out the fees regardless.
- priority_highAlly’s 3.5% match beats everyone’s — for two more weeks. The promo requires opening the IRA by July 31, 2026 (funding by 12/31), applies only to cash contributions from existing Ally customers, and locks contributions plus match for 24 months.
- priority_highMerrill’s custodial Roth application has quietly vanished. The Minor IRA application PDF is dead, and only account-maintenance forms for existing minor IRAs remain in its forms library. Whether a new one can still be opened is unpublished — call before you plan around it.
- priority_highT. Rowe Price launched its own spot-crypto ETF the day we verified. TKNZ (NYSE Arca) went live via SEC filing on July 16, 2026 — the first actively managed multi-token spot crypto ETP in the US. Whether T. Rowe’s own brokerage IRA can buy it is, as of the same day, unpublished.
- priority_highOnly Fidelity puts actual coins inside a Roth. Among these 20, Fidelity is the only custodian offering spot crypto inside the Roth wrapper itself (Fidelity Crypto IRA). Public routes spot crypto to a separate Crypto IRA custodied by Alto Trust. Everyone else means ETFs when they say crypto.
- priority_highA 6% mistake most apps can’t fix online. Over-contribute and the excess owes a 6% excise tax every year until removed. Only Fidelity and M1 offer true online self-service removal; at 7 of 20 the fix is phone or paper, and 3 publish no process at all — in an account sold as fully digital.

Fine print worth knowing
- IRA match / bonus: Schwab publishes no IRA contribution-match program. Its Referral Offer gives referred new clients a tiered bonus ($100 at $25K net deposit up to $1,000 at $500K+ within 45 days); retail IRAs are eligible accounts. No subscription requirement.
- Crypto in IRA: Brokerage accounts (incl. IRAs) can hold spot Bitcoin/Ethereum ETPs, crypto-related stocks/ETFs, mutual funds, and OTC coin trusts. Spot crypto ('Schwab Crypto') is coming soon but via a separate Charles Schwab Premier Bank, SSB account — not inside the brokerage/IRA.
- Custodial Roth (minor): Custodial Roth or Traditional IRA for a minor with earned income; generally no minimum balance or opening/maintenance fees. Opening is NOT online: 'Download a Schwab Custodial IRA application' and mail to Schwab (El Paso, TX). Custodian controls assets until 18 (or 25 in some states).

Fine print worth knowing
- IRA match / bonus: M1 offers no ongoing IRA contribution match. Its refer-a-friend bonus ($100 each, $1,000 funding within 60 days) is limited to individual, entity, joint, or trust accounts, and the terms explicitly exclude IRAs. Converting positions (in-kind) requires a Roth IRA Conversion Request form emailed to banking@tastytrade.com. Both accounts must be held at tastytrade; no fee for the c…
- Crypto in IRA: tastytrade offers spot crypto (via Zero Hash) in individual cash/margin accounts, but the trading-levels article lists it as non-permissible in IRAs: under 'Non-permissible trading activities in an IRA account' it now states flatly 'No cryptocurrency trading' — the earlier '(until further notice)' qualifier has been removed — an…

- IRA match / bonus: No IRA contribution match program exists. TradeStation's current cash-reward/promo pricing offer (tiered $50–$3,500 through July 31, 2026) explicitly excludes IRA accounts.
- Online Roth conversion: Traditional-to-Roth conversion is handled via the 'Approval for Distribution of Traditional IRAs, Roth IRAs and SEP/IRAs' form (rev. 0825), which has a 'Roth Conversion — IRA Conversion to a Roth IRA' checkbox; the completed form is mailed, faxed (954.652.7599), or emailed to clientexperience@tradestation.com. Methodology & update log
Each custodian was researched from its own published sources — pricing pages, fee schedules (PDFs included), help-center articles, account agreements, and SEC filings where relevant — with a source URL and verbatim quote recorded per cell. An independent adversarial pass then re-fetched every cited source and tried to refute each cell; 17 of 300 cells were corrected as a result (expired promotions, changed fee waivers, newly published capabilities), and the corrections are what you see above. Where a custodian publishes nothing on a capability, the cell says so rather than guessing. Bot-blocked pages were verified in a real browser session.
- 2026-07-16 — page published; all 300 cells verified this date. Notable same-day catch: T. Rowe Price’s TKNZ spot-crypto ETF launched via SEC filing hours before verification.
This matrix is re-verified quarterly, and sooner for known pending changes (Schwab’s announced crypto platform; Ally’s match promo expiring 7/31/2026). Spot an error? Tell us — corrections are logged in the changelog.

Custodian questions, answered plainly
Which custodian is best for a Roth IRA?
There is no universal best — the account works identically everywhere; only capabilities and fees differ. The practical method: find your dealbreaker first (custodial account, options tier, online excess fix, exit fee), which usually eliminates most of the list, then choose among survivors on cost. The big three (Fidelity, Schwab, Vanguard) pass most filters, which is why they're the default answer — but each fails at least one column in this matrix.
Which brokerages offer a custodial Roth IRA for a minor?
Of the 20 tracked here, seven offer a custodial (minor) Roth IRA: Fidelity, Vanguard and E*TRADE open one online; Schwab and Firstrade require a paper application; T. Rowe Price opens one by phone; and Merrill's application form has been removed from its site, leaving its status unpublished. No fintech app in this matrix (Robinhood, Webull, SoFi, M1, Public, Stash, Acorns) offers one.
Which Roth IRA custodians pay a contribution match?
Seven currently pay some match: Webull (3.5% with a paid Premium subscription), Ally (3.5% promo through 7/31/2026), Robinhood (3% with Gold, 1% without — self-directed IRAs only), Stash (3% capped at $225/yr, subscription required), Acorns (1–3%, first subscription year only), SoFi (1%, no strings beyond standard terms) and Public (1% on contributions; its transfer match ended 5/31/2026). Every match carries conditions — most commonly a 5-year holding period and a required subscription. An IRA match is taxable-account marketing economics applied to retirement accounts, not free money without terms.
Can you hold crypto in a Roth IRA?
Mostly as ETFs. Among these 20 custodians, only Fidelity offers spot crypto inside the Roth itself (Fidelity Crypto IRA); Public offers spot coins via a separate Crypto IRA custodied by Alto Trust. Fourteen others allow crypto exposure only through exchange-listed crypto ETFs, and Ally, Acorns and TradeStation offer no crypto exposure in an IRA at all.
What does it cost to move a Roth IRA to another broker?
Between $0 and about $200. Fidelity and Interactive Brokers charge nothing; Schwab, Merrill and Vanguard are free for partial transfers; most others charge $50–$100 for an outbound ACAT. The expensive exits stack fees: M1 charges $200 all-in ($100 ACAT + $100 IRA closure), TradeStation $175, tastytrade $135, and Acorns requires liquidating every position at $35 per ETF because it doesn't support in-kind transfers out. The transfer itself is not a taxable event when done trustee-to-trustee.
Does this page have affiliate relationships with any custodian?
No. RothIRAHub has no affiliate, referral or advertising relationship with any custodian on this page, and no custodian paid for placement or ranking. Every cell was researched from the custodian's own published pages and documents, re-verified on the date shown, and the full dataset — including a source URL and quote for every cell — is downloadable below.
